IPv6 was introduced to solve a fundamental problem: the limited number of available IPv4 addresses. With the rapid growth of internet-connected devices, IPv6 offers a vastly larger address space and improved network efficiency. Despite these advantages, its adoption has been slower than many expected.

One of the biggest challenges is compatibility. IPv6 is not directly compatible with IPv4, which means organisations cannot simply switch from one to the other. Instead, they must run both systems in parallel, a process known as dual stacking. This increases complexity, requires additional resources, and makes the transition less appealing.

Another key reason is the continued effectiveness of workarounds like Network Address Translation (NAT). NAT allows multiple devices to share a single IPv4 address, significantly extending the life of IPv4. While not ideal, this solution has reduced the urgency for organisations to migrate fully to IPv6.

Cost is another important factor. Transitioning to IPv6 often requires upgrading network infrastructure, updating software, and retraining staff. For many organisations, especially smaller ones, the immediate benefits do not justify the investment, leading to delayed adoption.

There is also a knowledge and skills gap. Many IT professionals have spent years working with IPv4 and may not have extensive experience with IPv6. This creates hesitation and slows down implementation, particularly in organisations without strong technical resources.

In addition, the lack of a strong business incentive has played a role. Unlike other technological upgrades, IPv6 does not always provide immediate, visible benefits to end users. As a result, businesses may prioritise other investments that offer quicker returns.
